East Coast Gems Alert The Medic Announce Spring Residency In Southern Ontario

Alert the Medic is excited to announce a spring residency in Southern Ontario! The Halifax four-piece is fresh off their appearance at this year’s East Coast Music Week. The tour will see them playing weekly residencies in Toronto, Brantford and Ottawa with a few stops on the east coast.

Fans and critics alike have been praising Alert the Medic’s anthemic sound and high-energy performances. Their most recent release We, the Weapon was produced by Laurence Currie (Sloan, Wintersleep) and garnered the band widespread attention on the east coast, airplay on Much Music and college radio coast to coast. They have been recognized at the Music Nova Scotia Awards and East Coast Music Awards. Since then, life has been a whirlwind of shows and touring for the band. They’ve played alongside Ill Scarlett, Hollerado, The Arkells and Our Lady Peace.

After months away from the Ontario music scene, Alert the Medic are ready to take back the spotlight. Be sure to catch them at one of their many upcoming dates listed below!

BIO
2011 East Coast Music Award Nominees for “Fan Choice Entertainer of the Year”, Alert The Medic is a four piece rock band from Halifax, Nova Scotia, whose anthemic sound and high energy performances have been winning over audiences everywhere. They are Ryan MacDonald, vocals/guitar; Troy Arseneault, guitar; Matt Campbell, bass; and Dale Wilson, drums. Alert The Medic’s sophomore album, “We, The Weapon”, received 2010 Music Nova Scotia Award Nominations for Group Recording of the Year and Pop/Rock Artist/Group Recording of the Year, as well as 2010 East Coast Music Award Nominations for Sirius Satellite Rock Recording of the Year and Vibe Creative Group Single of the Year for “Atlas”, the debut release from the album. “Atlas” achieved national rotation for over 14 weeks and cracked Mediabase’s Top 50 Active Rock Canadian Charts. Highlights of 2010 included a performance at the JunoFest celebrations in St. John’s, Newfoundland, alongside fellow rockers The Arkells and Hollerado, and a coveted a spot on the Music Nova Scotia Week Gala Awards Show stage in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.

In the spring of 2009, Alert The Medic temporarily relocated to Toronto and rejoined Juno award winning Producer, Laurence Currie (Sloan, Wintersleep) to create, “We, The Weapon”. This album is a dynamic display of infectious melodies and passionate performances; driven only by their collective rock tendencies. “We, The Weapon” is an excellent representation of big city claustrophobia and small town frustration, citing that somewhere in-between there is always room for another voice. Songs such as “Let’s Hear It For the Symphony” and “The Wound That Won’t Heal”, call on the youth of the world to stand up and be counted, while “The Weatherman (pt.2)” presents a haunting tone, finding the lack of light at the end of the tunnel. “We,The Weapon” was Alert The Medic’s highly anticipated follow up to their 2006 Self-Titled debut album. The first single off the self-titled project, “Reported Missing,” climbed to #1 on the East Coast Countdown radio show and gained the group national attention. The album garnered 2008 award nominations from both the East Coast Music Association and Music Nova Scotia, including CBC’s coveted Galaxie Rising Star of the Year. The year was capped off with the D250 Rollercoaster Tour with Ill Scarlett and an opening appearance with Our Lady Peace at Center 200 in Sydney, Nova Scotia.

Alert the Medic’s blue-collared approach to touring and passionate live performances make them a stand out on the East Coast music scene.

Gabrielle Papillon “Little Bug” Fundraiser and Presale

Folk songstress Gabrielle Papillon announces her new Little Bug LP fundraiser and pre-sale! Watch Gabrielle with friend and band mate Corinna Rose perform the title track, courtesy of Heavy Weather:

The Little Bug LP will consist of 11 tracks and is being set for release in late September, 2012. In order to get the project rolling, Gabrielle has set up a fundraiser page for friends and fans to get involved! Contributions will be returned in the form of advance album downloads, signed posters, concert tickets, hand-written lyrics and other goodies. Read a sample of Gabrielle’s letter to her fans below. For more information on the project and to contribute, visit:  http://www.kapipal.com/littlebug

 — -

All right. It’s time. After two years of touring full time and nearly non-stop, I am heading into the studio at the end of May to record an album that has been a long time in the making.

Both The Wanderer (2010) and The Currency of Poetry (2011) were released on small budgets. This meant fewer songs, recycled tracks here and there, less instrumentation, and far less time spent in studio recording, mixing, and mastering.

A lot of love went into those albums and they were really important steps in getting a sense of what my bandmates and I can accomplish together in studio.
According to Corinna Rose, who is sitting here next to me on the train as I struggle to write this already over-long epistle, this album we are about to record “is going to rock this frickin world or something along those lines.” Well, it’s definitely the biggest endeavor to date. The ingredients for all this awesome we speak of? Six days in a killer studio with all the gear we need, two sound booths to get things done more efficiently, one genius producer, all the instruments and harmonies I imagined in my head, and more time with the mixing and mastering so that it sounds perfect.

Little Bug will consist of 11 songs. Nine new tunes (one in French!) and two re-imagined, fresh recordings of ‘Wedding Song’ and ‘Turn Left’ (originally released on The Wanderer). Recording will take place at The Treatment Room in Montreal with engineer Gilles Castilloux (Plants and Animals, Snailhouse, Timber Timbre, Stars) manning the boards, and Halifax-based producer Daniel Ledwell (Jenn Grant, Don Brownrigg, Heather Green) at the helm of the project.

This here is a mishmash of a fundraiser and a pre-sale for the new album. While I was in the running up until the very last for funding from two different resources, in the end, there just weren’t enough dollars to go around and many worthy projects (including this one) are left without that financial support. Forging ahead without that funding is a daunting task, but everyone involved in the project is ready to go and with so many talented folks ready and willing to make this project work I’m taking a massive leap of faith. We’re doing it. It’s happening. And it’s going to be great.

To the right of this rather long missive you’ll spot a list of treats and goodies for any and all contributions made to the project. Starting simply with copies of the album, every single dollar counts. I mean it. Every single dollar. Every single contributor becomes a backer for the project, even those of you spreading the word by means of high-tech interweb social networking websites. You are contributing! Yep, that’s what the music industry is fast becoming! The efforts of many, who simply believe in the music, coming together to make it happen.

Where the money goes: It’s going to cost a pretty penny. Studio and engineer fees will run about $4000. Producer, mixing, and mastering will come to $7000. Album production will run around $2000, and if I’m really lucky and can raise the funds I’d sure like to pay my musicians! I love their willingness to play for free. I don’t want them to play for free.

One of the most humbling things about being an Indie musician these days is how willingly other musicians will take part in a project when the budget just doesn’t allow for them to actually get paid for their precious contributions. We all pitch in. I think the heart of the project lies in these group efforts to see it through.

“The Mighty Oak band” will consist of some of my favourite people: precious friends possessed with incredible talents.

Among them are long-time collaborative partners who’ve been integral participants in my last two recordings: Corinna Rose, Simon Honeyman, and Lisa Malachowski (Mind that Bird, Heirloom). Also pitching in are a gang of new and old friends with abundant talent: Roxanne Potvin is going to pitch in some killer telecaster riffs and some French harmonies. David Simard is going to sing really high notes with Simon Honeyman. Ari Swan and Quintin Norin will be making up the string section. Brie Neilson will contribute her velvety alto vocals, and Tim Van de Ven and Ram Krishnan (The Unsettlers, Bad Uncle) make up the rhythm sections. There are a few others who will be joining in our efforts to be announced soon. I’m really hoping to have some of my Haligonian bandmates participate in the project but funding may not allow for it. We shall see what the coming months bring!

The album is currently set for release in late September on my dad’s birthday (the 24th) and I’ll be touring the album across Canada all Fall.

I’m certainly not known for being short on words. Thanks for sticking with me and reading all the way to the last. Thanks loads, in advance, to any and all contributors, helping hands, and news-spreaders.

Let’s do this! Let’s make a record!

Bugs and Fishes,

Gabrielle

Toronto’s Sandman Viper Command Announce US and Canadian Tour with Archie Powell & the Exports, New 7 Inch on the Way

Photo: Joel Yum

Live favourites Sandman Viper Command are pleased to announce a run of U.S. and Canadian dates with Chicago’s Archie Powell & The Exports in May. The four-piece, who’s youthful angst has burgeoned into meticulously messy and catchy rock n’ roll, will be opening for White Denim on April 16 at The Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto and bringing along a string of new songs for debut.

Sandman Viper Command have returned to their Hamilton roots and holed themselves up again in Barn Window Recording Studio; the same studio where their debut release Everybody See This was conceived just a few short years ago. With fresh material laid down the group is anxious to share and will be doing so in the form of a new 7 inch, entitled Feel is Good, which will be released in May to coincide with the tour dates. More info to be announced soon surrounding the release. With one release show already set for their hometown of Hamilton, ON and another to be announced for Toronto shortly, there will be lots of celebrating to do.  Since their debut, Sandman Viper Command have released new material in the form of theRough Love 7 inch featuring tracks produced by Jon Drew (Fucked Up, Tokyo Police Club, The Arkells), available for download below.

From best friend beginnings in the suburbs of Toronto, Sandman Viper Command emerged with their debut release Everybody See This during a time when typical twenty-somethings are pulling all-nighters cramming for exams. Now, two years later, Rob Janson, Aaron Harvey, Dan Reardon, and Matt Meyer have won fans and critics alike over with their unique blend of rock n’ roll and have carved a place for themselves in the burgeoning Canadian musical landscape with a performance resume boasting Canadian Music Week, Edgefest, North By Northeast and even a trip south of the border for CMJ Music Marathon in New York City.

Coffee Shop Project: Pick of the Month April 2012 – Cai.ro

Since the release of their debut record, the “Young Love EP”, Cai.ro has been on a steady rise in the Canadian indie music scene. NOW! Magazine called them a “must see”. CMJ also featured the band in their September artist spotlight and their live video on BalconyTV.com ranked 2nd on the site’s worldwide list of videos released during the same week.

Nate Daniels, Matt Sullivan, Caitlin Grieve, Dante Berardi Jr and Wooyoung Kim definitely have an ear for haunting quiet and walls of sound. Their sound, sometimes orchestral and sometimes minimal, has carved out a new niche. Something familiar, while remaining original.”It wouldn’t be hard to picture the members of Cai.ro… chopping up a soundtrack for Darren Aronofsky or the like,” said Alex Eriksen of CMJ. XM Radio’s Discover Music Canada called them “the love child of Gotye and Arcade Fire,” saying they have “delicate middle ground between busy and restrained.” Alan Cross compared them to the Fleet Foxes, likening “Halfway There” to the gentle sounds of the Seattle band.

Coffee Shop Project (CSP) is an Audio Blood initiative and aims to promote independent music with like-minded people in independent places. Launching in September, CSP stands and download cards can now be found in 11 coffee shops across Toronto.
