Fan favourites Paper Lions have a lot to celebrate this spring and summer! Their music video for “Travelling” just surpassed the 1 million views mark, with numbers continuing to grow by the thousands every day, and they are fresh off the heels of nominations for “Song of the Year” and “Fan’s Choice Entertainer of the Year” at the 2012 East Coast Music Awards!

“We’re getting views in Kuwait, we’re getting views in Darfour. We’re getting views in Germany, Australia, all over the place… When you start thinking about your music touching that amount of people on a regular basis, it kind of makes my jaw drop a little bit,” says drummer David Cyrus MacDonald of the viral status of the “Travelling” video in an interview with CBC.

To further prove just how much love is in the air for Paper Lions these days, the band also reached their goal of $10,000 for recording via a crowdfunding website to help them record their forthcoming LP. Said LP is slated for a fall release and features the production work of Howard Redekopp. Redekopp’s impressive portfolio includes producing releases from Tegan & Sarah, Said the Whale, Mother Mother, and more!

With such a strong start to 2012, Paper Lions are chugging forward on stellar momentum, preparing to to release an acoustic EP in June 2012, with supporting East Coast and Ontario dates, including North By Northeast and The Dragonboat Festival!

Hailing from the unlikely small community of Belfast, Prince Edward Island, brothers John and Rob MacPhee and neighbour Colin Buchanan began playing music together at a very young age in a variety of garage bands. After meeting in high school, David Cyrus MacDonald was recruited and Paper Lions cemented with John and Rob filling the positions of lead vocals and bass respectively, Colin on lead guitar and David on drums.

Eight years and three vans in, with over 1300 shows played, Paper Lions has received 16 ECMA nominations and one win, over twenty PEIMA nominations and four wins, the Touring Artist of the Year award from CAPACOA, a Verge Music Award nomination, and a CBC Radio 3 ‘Bucky’ award nomination. They’ve played Hillside Festival, Virgin Festival, The Warped Tour, Stan Rogers Folk Festival, Evolve Festival and many more. They’ve shared the stage with such varied acts as CAKE, Tokyo Police Club, Hollerado, The Rheostatics, No Joy, Hot Hot Heat and Electric Six. They’ve had their songs featured on primetime television shows, MuchMusic, MTV and AUX, had an iTunes Single of the Week, were finalists in the 2010 John Lennon Songwriting Competition and won the David Suzuki Playlist for the Planet competition.

Up and coming pop quartet Crystalyne are excited to announce the release of their much anticipated Navigate EP on June 5th, 2012. After just wrapping up a 3 month tour of visiting over 60 high schools in Canada earlier this year, the band has been cutting their teeth on the road and are finally ready to share some new material with fans. To support the new release Crystalyne will be kicking off an extensive tour on June 2nd in their hometown, Toronto.

Playing music and touring relentlessly is not uncharted waters for Crystalyne. Good and Broken, front woman Marissa Dattoli’s, previous musical project was featured on the second season of MuchMusic’s disBAND and their music videos have seen over 500,000 plays. The show garnered a lot of attention but internal struggles lead to their eventual demise. Not to be discouraged, Marissa quickly was back at the microphone with 3 new band members to form the now stronger than ever Crystalyne.

The lead single off “Navigate”, “Wolves” has a compelling video to go along with the equally compelling track. The song showcases Dattoli’s impressival vocal range and the bands skillful blend of aggressive rock and melodic pop. “Navigate” will be available digitally on June 5th.

The #NAVIGATETOUR will span the whole month of June with Justin Dubé (Everlea) supporting on the majority of the shows. Crystalyne will also touch down in St. Catharines for a performance at S.C.E.N.E. Music Festival. Dates and download links below.

The single will be the first hint of what Sandman Viper Command has been cooking up with producer Dave King for their upcoming full-length release. Feel is Good will include the title track, which has been debuted at a number of SVC shows, and the song ‘Clean Inside’. The Feel is Good 7inch will be available later in the summer.

For the uninitiated, Sandman Viper Command are a four-piece rock explosion from Toronto by-way-of Hamilton, ON. While other kids were making tough decisions about becoming doctors and lawyers, the intrepid lads of SVC were booking shows and hard at work on their debut album, Everybody See This. Garnering the praise of audience and critics alike, the band has become known for their exquisite brand of catchy rock and roll. The band’s live show is a powerful and energetic experience, making catching the band live (and grabbing a copy of Feel is Good) a must this spring.

While playing 5+ sets at this year’s Canadian Music Week in Toronto, local production company Studiofeed recorded a 10 minute mini-documentary on the band highlighting the recording of these two new tracks and more! Watch it here!

11:11 showcases influences from a multitude of genres and decades past. From the wondrous psychedelia of old Hollywood films to the grit and glamour of modern pop/rock and roll, the eleven eclectic tracks of 11:11 bend the genres of music into something previously unheard. Classic sci-fi sounds created by the theremin, saws and cinematic strings accent the more haunting shades of the album on tracks like “Doctor, Doctor” and “A Bitch Like Me” while the appearance of the electric kazoo in “The Better Way” and clear ties to California surf/rock in “Rent An Ocean” highlight a more whimsical songwriting process for the project. Hill’s seductive vocals bridge the overarching themes of connection and alienation with the darker musical tones throughout the album. The final sound is what some would describe as “alien surf rock”, but as Hill herself puts it, “genres are open and have space to grow, thereʼs room to search for who you are, and have fun while youʼre doing it”.

After the 2011 release of Hill & The Sky Heroes’ debut 4-track ‘11EP’, a teaser to 11:11, NOW Magazine was quick to boast that the band is “a grab bag of influences, mixing surf, pop, soul, glam and dub into a deceptively cohesive sound”. Serena Ryder, one of Hill’s many collaborators that appear on 11:11, describes their sound as, “multi-dimensional rock and roll… If Gwen Stefani and Dalbello had a love child, this is what they would sound like. Hill’s voice and lyrics will take you on a soul journey and land you back in your body changed”.

Hill & the Sky Heroes’ debut album, 11:11, is set for release on June 12th, 2012 and will be celebrated with a CD release party on June 11th at the Drake Underground in Toronto.

It’s been a busy year for the man who never seems to sleep. It’s incredible that Ben Caplan has any strength left to tickle the ivories and entrance crowds across the continent after his impressive showing at the East Coast Music Awards earlier this month. Ben Caplan & the Casual Smokers had an opportunity to play the ECMA Awards Gala this year. CBC Music declared the band to be the “2012 ECMA Buzz Band”, and commented that Ben simply “blew away the audience at the awards show”.

Not content to ever stay in one place, Ben Caplan set out on his third European tour on April 20th. Sweeping through the Netherlands, Belgium, the UK, and Poland, the tour has been off to a rollicking start. Caplan fans will be glad to hear that Ben recently signed to Cool Buzz Records who re-released his debut full length In the Time of the Great Remembering last month in Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg. He’s already played a string of sold out show across the Netherlands, and after he’s about to trail with his band across the English channel for two weeks in the UK including performances at the Great Escape Festival in Brighton and Liverpool Sound City later this month.

As if that wasn’t enough, the man contending for the title of “The Hardest Working Man in Show Business” has announced he’ll be setting off on a tour of Central Canada, including a showcase at the North by Northeast Festival in Toronto.
