This morning at the East Coast Music Association press conference it was announced that Ben Caplan was nominated for both Rising Star Recording of the Year and Folk Recording of the Year. To see the official nominations announcement click here:

On the heels of this good news, the Halifax artist has announced the third night in a run of shows at the Company House in Halifax, NS. This show comes in response to the early sell out of tickets for two back-to-back shows (February 1st and 2nd). And After these shows both sold out, there was a social media outcry for more tickets. Caplan was able to rope in Cape Breton’s Carmen Townsend for a rare acoustic set to get the evening started in full form.

The run of shows are sure to be a special send-off for Caplan before he heads back on the road for much of 2013. Tickets for this show, and more across Canada and Australia, can be found at http://bencaplan.ca.

The first half of 2013 will see Caplan touring extensively, including showcases at Folk Alliance International Conference and Festival in Toronto, a return to South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, TX, and performances in Australia including the Byron Bay Bluesfest alongside greats like Wilco, Santana, Paul Simon, and more.

Fans can also expect a new full-length release later in the year.

The East Coast Music Awards Gala, where Ben will hope to pick up some awards, will take place during East Coast Music Week, from March 6-10 in Halifax, NS. For more information about the week’s festivities please visit: http://www.ecma.com/

Toronto based experimental pop-rockers Hands & Teeth are back with a brand new single ‘Exploring’. The single, released as a live off the floor recording for the upcoming From Far and Wide segments, is off of their upcoming EP.

It comes off the tails of their acclaimed album Hunting Season which was released in January of this year, and follows performances at SXSW, Canadian Music Week, and NXNE. In this raw recording, listeners get a glimpse of the talent each member brings to the songs of Hands & Teeth, and what to expect in their upcoming showcases at Halifax Pop Explosion.

Watch the video for ‘Exploring’ here:

After releasing Hunting Season, Hands & Teeth had a flurry of successes come their way, beginning with the titular single appearing in an online ad for McDonald’s. The album charted on campus radio stations across Canada, giving way to national airplay on stations such as CBC 3, CBC 2, and BBC 6, providing the masses with the unique sound that only Hands & Teeth can produce. This eclectic sound offers something to be enjoyed by fans of varied musical tastes – ranging from Broken Social Scene style build ups to dark, gritty vocals – a lot of ground is covered.

The new single is no different, providing a sneak peek into what we can expect from the upcoming concept album. Hands & Teeth don’t plan on losing their momentum, and will continue to make waves with their unique brand of music as they hit both Montreal and Fredericton on their way to a handful of shows at this year’s Halifax Pop Explosion Music Festival. Campaign Overview

The annual outdoor music festival of the year, Edgefest hit Downsview Park in Toronto, Ontario on July 14, 2012 bringing with it headliners Billy Talent, Death From Above 1979, and Silversun Pickups on the main stage. The side stage boasted the likes of Yukon Blonde, Whale Tooth, Hacienda, The Balconies, and more! In addition to the two stages this year marked the first ever electronic stage with JFK (of MSTRKRFT) and Morgan Page as well as some of the other top electronic acts of the year. AB was hired to handle national publicity for the festival. This included obtaining advance coverage, managing day-of requests and interviews, and following up to get coverage after the event.

AB created an extensive media awareness campaign surrounding Edgefest 2012 with press releases sent out nationally announcing the festival date, ticket info, and line-up followed by the final line-up additions and announcement of the first ever electronic stage. With such a wide range of acts announced for the festival, digital outlets took notice, while local Toronto major outlets focused in on the annual fest. Based on AB’s relationships with key Toronto media, outlets ranging from print and television to online to campus radio were requesting coverage in advance and were accredited for on-site coverage.

AB’s team descended on Downsview Park hours before gates opened clipboards in hand and ready for a full day. AB’s team was part of the media’s day from start to finish with a well identified check-in table, air conditioned trailer (aka. The AB Media Lounge), and escorts to and from the photo pit for main stage sets. In total 56 media outlets were accredited and accommodated for on-site interviews all of which were scheduled beforehand, and rescheduled accordingly on-site.

The results of Edgefest 2012 were incredibly positive. In addition to the 56 accredited on-site media outlets, national publicity coverage was obtained pre-event and additional coverage was reached internationally with Alter the Press and Pollstar in the United States taking notice of the festival. Samples of pre-event coverage can be found below:

Key media were present on the day-of the festival including the following:
· BlogTO
· Associated Press
· MSN Canada
· National Post
· Now Magazine
· Spinner/AOL Music
· The Toronto Sun

The media were thrilled with the care and organization that went in to them having a great day at Edgefest 2012! Here is a sample of social media feedback received post-event from media in attendance:

Our client, Goldenvoice Canada could not have been more thrilled as well!

“I met Sari at Edgefest 2011 and was so impressed with her drive and vision. I jumped at the opportunity to hire AB to handle the media at and leading up to Edgefest 2012. Her team are true professionals. The media were happy, the coverage was plenty, the feedback about their team on-site was very positive and their follow-up was outstanding. Sari and her team offer so much more than traditional PR. Her insight into social media, personal relationships with bloggers and the right outlets to enhance the ‘fear of missing out’ marketing initiatives are invaluable. It is a delight to work with AB.”

Today marks the release of The Mohawk Lodge‘s 4th LP Damaged Goods.   It’s their rawest, shortest (the album comes in at 30 minutes on the nose), and most energetic album to date and draws on inspiration from several euro-wide tours and talent from across Canada.  Inspired by summer nights, voodoo, long drives, and near-death experiences, Damaged Goods is a culmination of lyrical stories, anthemic hooks and pop licks brought to life live-off-the-floor in a Toronto heatwave by Ryder Havdale, Eamon McGrath, Clay Jones (Huddle), Scott Freeman, Danny Miles and Peter Dreimanis (July Talk).  The final touches were done across the country with Jordan Koop (Emergency Room) at his new Noise Floor studio in Ladysmith, BC.   It’s an album brimming with energy that draws comparisons to such bands as The Constantines, Hold Steady, Ladyhawk and Gaslight Anthem.

Ryder Havdale, mastermind behind The Mohawk Lodge and owner/manager of White Whale Recordsis currently travelling and touring Berlin.  The Mohawk Lodge is on tour in Europe through to the end of the year and will return to Canada for a cross-country tour in the spring of 2013.

Damaged Goods is out now in Canada and available on 180-gram vinyl, CD and digitally at the White Whale Records store.

About M for Montreal
Founded in 2006 by Sébastien Nasra (Avalanche Productions), in collaboration with the legendary British festival programmer Martin Elbourne (Glastonbury Festival, The Great Escape and co-founder along with Peter Gabriel of the WOMAD festival), M for Montreal presents various showcases, aside from its main event in November (Nov 14-17, 2012), all around the world – Canadian Music Week in Toronto, South by Southwest in Austin, The Great Escape in Brighton, North by Northeast in Toronto, Iceland Airwaves in Reykjavik, CMJ Music Marathon in New York, Festival Les Inrocks in Paris – and in Quebec (Mini-m, M for Mid Day, Mini-m on the road) that put Montreal and Canadian music in the spotlight.

A throwback to the days of Victorian seaside intrigue where peculiarity reigned and anything seemed possible, Revelstoke’s (also known as Andrew Seale) new video for “Dans La Mer (Howl for Sade)” premiered this morning on AUX.tv. The animated video and narrative closely echoes the old world folk combined with swirling voices, dancing harmonicas and tumbling layers of the track – an unusual and intriguing song.  “It’s a cross between The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou and Le Voyage Dans La Lune careening helplessly through Sam’s and my unusual and seahorse-obsessed minds,” describes Andrew of the final product created alongside friend and collaborator Sam Cole. The video can be seen here – http://bit.ly/V9VcbE

Revelstoke proves to surpass the signature musical tone of his last EP Esprit d’Escalier, as he shows admirably in his new  4-track release My-Oh-My. The sound is romantic and blends together the melody of a mandolin, bowed guitar and Banjo comprising Revelstoke’s collective feel. “Dans La Mer (Howl For Sade)” validates Revelstoke’s lyrical charm with a perfect blend of melodic allure to sail away into a daydream. The video for “Dans La Mer (Howl For Sade)” marks the beginning of another new release, and a significant success for the freelance dreamer, part time journalist and full time performer.

This month has brought new waves of success for the Toronto native, well known for his experimental folk lyrics and distinctive creative (and, at times, outright unusual) sound. Revelstoke’s EP release My-Oh-My will be released following his return home from a packed week at Halifax Pop Explosion. As the winter months bring shorter days and longer night, Revelstoke provides the ideal nautical sound for a seasoned day dream, sedated and affectionate in all the right tempos.

Ben Caplan & the Casual Smokers – Condut

Contest closes Nov. 15

The Flowers Of Hell are proud to release their fourth album, Odes, an orch-pop covers record that received an early airing from Lou Reed on his New York Shuffle radio show.  Their current and past work has established them as an “artist’s artist”, with praise having come from members of The Velvet Underground, My Bloody Valentine, Spiritualized, Spacemen 3, The Wedding Present, The Patti Smith Group, The Fugs plus Laurie Anderson and others. ‘Odes’ features The Flowers’ interpretations of songs written by Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, Siouxie & The Banshees, Laurie Anderson, Klaatu, Stereolab, Joy Division, Neutral Milk Hotel, Fleetwood Mac, and the Plastic People Of The Universe.

Based in Toronto and London, with a revolving membership of 16 or so musicians, the Flowers Of Hell are led by Canadian synaesthette Greg Jarvis who co-produced the album with Peter Moore (John Cale, Neil Young, Cowboy Junkies).  The album includes collaborations with British Sea Power’s Neil Wilkinson and Abi Fry (the latter being a founding member of the Flowers), as well as the Czech dissident musician Ivo Pospíšil, a key member of The Plastic People Of The Universe’s many offshoot groups. Despite it’s transatlantic influences, Odes qualifies as a Canadian-Content release.

Odes differs greatly in its tone and direction from previous Flowers’ releases. 2010’s O was an epic 45 minute abstract piece that sought to break beyond traditional songwriting; this time the group do the opposite, celebrating straight up songs as penned by their favourite writers. Known for their non-linear instrumentals, this is the first time the Flowers of Hell have released music featuring lyrics or verse-chorus-verse structures.

Each song covered on Odes was selected for a purpose. Jarvis had often wondered what Neutral Milk Hotel’s ‘On Avery Island-April 1st’ might sound like if played by a classically trained trumpeter. Joy Division’s ‘Atmosphere’ is a core influence on the Flowers of Hell’s style and it’s been done here with their signature sound. ‘Muchomůrky Bílé (Destroying Angel)’ is the unofficial anthem of the old Czech dissident movement and one of the original musicians from that scene, Ivo Pospíšil, agreed to do the vocals.

Before expanding into a full album, the initial sessions were intended to become a Lou Reed inspired EP, hence the record’s heavy Velvet Underground influence. With ‘Walk On The Wild Side’ the group used the lyrics from a rare Lou Reed demo taped before its classic verses were written. On ‘O Superheroin’, they celebrate the marriage of Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson buy marrying ‘O Superman’ and ‘Heroin’. ‘Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft’ was written by 1970s Toronto outsiders Klaatu, with lyrics from a paragraph that the International Flying Saucer Bureau’s global members tried to simultaneously telepath into outer space in 1953. The result is a record that synthesizes great songwriting with the Flowers Of Hell’s epic genre bending arrangements.

Praise for Flowers of Hell:

“They take orchestral pop to the next level.” – Rolling Stone

“Stirringly evocative” – NME

“They balance stately chamber pop with noise.” – Pitchfork
