THE BALCONIES

the-balconiesHometown: Ottawa, ON
For fans of: B52’s, Bloc Party
While training in classical music at Ottawa University, future couple Jacquie Neville and Liam Jaeger met in between concert etudes and ensemble practice. Though their passion for post-tonal theory and Brahms is a common thread, something else bound them together, and that something was their need to let loose on stage in the form of an incredibly high-energy pop band, taking their classically-trained backgrounds and throwing it all aside in exchange for soaked t-shirts, frantically dancing fans, and beer-stained van seats. Even worse for Papa Neville, the two lovers roped in kid brother Stephen Neville to play bass and hold his own beside sister Jacquie as co-lead-vocalist. The Balconies released their debut album in September 2009.

BASS LIONS

bass-lionsHometown: Guelph, ON
For fans of: The Most Serene Republic, She & Him
Bass Lions are a magnanimous quintet. They’re like the five golden rings on the fifth day of Christmas; fit for the fingers of god: one glorious fist.
Bass Lions make winter music so wherever or whenever you are, get ready: winter is coming.
Bass Lions take their double-drumming close-singing, organ-swirling, bass-slapping, guitar-clawing show on the road. They play with Malajube, Young Galaxy, YACHT, Bahamas, Yukon Blonde, and Ladyhawke. They crash their van somewhere in the Rockies. They crush their debut “More Than Islands” and merge its songs seamlessly with those from their sophomore album “… is Diamonds” in a smooth and scrabbling, highly syncopated live show that has people craning their necks.
They find hooks where nobody’s been looking and they hook you with them.
Welcome back Bass Lions you diamonds; you perfect cuts. How we’ve missed you.

Boats play music songs in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada with lyrics about dismemberment (the good kind), excellent posture, and orthodontic surgery. A junky indie-pop band with high-end hopes but low-end equipment, Mat Klachefsky’s bizarre vocal chords mixed with his “infectiously catchy” pop songs and boundless energy have been freaking out audiences ever since they released their critically acclaimed first album Intercontinental Champion to local audiences in October 2007. Since then they have embarked on four Canadian tours, played packed houses at SXSW, NXNE, Pop Montreal, WCMA’s and Sled Island, and charted solidly all across Canada.

For fans of: Ben Folds, The Band
Straight from the heart of the suburban wasteland that is Barrie, Ontario, comes Brett Caswell, an emerging singer songwriter who has set his sights on breaking your heart, then making you smile. Drawing comparisons to Ben Folds with a little alt-country flavour, Caswell’s songwriting, coupled with the rawness and energy of his live performances have earned him a large and enthusiastic regional following. With the upcoming release of his first solo effort, the tireless work to expand those local boundaries will begin anew. Backed by the Marquee Rose, which features two members from Barrie’s Fox Jaws, the band is unstoppable on stage and ready to take 2010 by storm.

Three years ago a band was formed out of writers block, alcohol abuse, debt, and obsessive compulsive disorder. Within those three years Cactus’s has relentlessly toured the US and Canada, released their self recorded EP Tropical Terror, played SXSW, CMJ, and even been asked to play the Canadian Music Week festival in Toronto as one of only three American bands. Most recently, Cactus’s finished recording their new 13 song full length, New Bonesand spent 3 months living and playing shows in South Korea, spreading their brand of rowdy thrash rock to Asia. Cactus’s was also recently featured as unsigned band of the month in Alternative Press magazine.

CLOTHES MAKE THE MAN
http://clothesmaketheman.org
cmtm10Hometown: Toronto, ON
For Fans of: Foo Fighters, The Constantines
Clothes Make the Man is like a group of the loud mouthed kids yelling into microphones alongside cranked up amplifiers and pounding drums… except with beards and deeper voices. The band manages to maintain the same level of wide eyed enthusiasm with every set they play, so each audience member feels as they did the first time they ate sushi on a yacht made of diamonds. Rest assured, Clothes Make the Man are not a metal or hardcore band and lack the immature essence kids often bestow. CMTM are masterful songwriters, almost unbeknownst to themselves. In dark bars, parties, or bright festival stages CMTM transform into raucous punk rock and rollers, yelling about the economy and its endless digression, schizophrenia, alcohol and of course, girls. Fist pumping in the form of group sing-a-longs so huge and juicy it could make you sick. And yet, in the midst of all this aggression and rage, emerges some of the biggest hearted songs this culturally confused city of Toronto could bear to emit. In between the dripping sweat and guitar heavy choruses, the band opens their collective 8 arms and hugs the audience with their vicious wall of sound. And whether you like it or not, you’re getting a big wet one!

CORDUROY

corduroy2Hometown: Toronto, ON
For fans of: The Shins, Pavement
It’s been a long time coming for Toronto four piece, Corduroy. Developing their brand of haunting folklore tales laced with sweeping post rock guitars and group hum-a-longs, hasn’t been all that easy. Originally starting out as Whatever Happened to Corduroy? in 2007, the band released a well received debut self titled EP of their mixed and messy ideas that was blazing with promise. After dropping the wordy “whatever happened to” and some line up shifts, the band has developed a unique and delicate blend of indie rock. In fact, one could say Corduroy have found their calling. Unlike most bands, Corduroy cite influential songwriters like Bright Eyes, Pavement, Okkervil River, and Arcade Fire all in one song, and then manage to come out sounding entirely original and fresh. Each song stamped with the Corduroy sound and memorable punch, that will bring first time listeners back for more again and again.

DINOSAUR BONES
http://myspace.com/dinosaurbonesband
dino-bonesHometown: Toronto, ON
For fans of: Phoenix, Cold War Kids
While you’d be hard-pressed to get them to admit it, Dinosaur Bones have inadvertently become the poster boys for abandoning education in the name of rock n’ roll. In 2008, after months of prioritizing writing melodic indie rock songs over Hemingway essays, vocalist/guitarist Ben Fox finally packed up his guitars, leaving behind his undergrad and Montreal apartment for his hometown of Toronto. It was with that, a bold against-your-guidance-counsellor’s-best-advice move, that Dinosaur Bones was born. As soon as he re-planted himself in his home soil, Fox immediately began assembling a mosaic of former bandmates and friends-of-friends to give life to the skeleton of songs captured on his shifty 4-track recorder: Branko Scekic (bass), Dave Wickland (keys), Lucas Fredette (drums) and Joel Clifton (guitar). Raw as they were, the outside input from these fresh minds quickly turned his unpolished tunes into broody pop gems, dripping with haunting synth layers and a throbbing rhythm section. In late 2009, Dinosaur Bones entered the studio with producer Jon Drew (Fucked Up, Tokyo Police Club, the Arkells) to lay down the foundation for their long-anticipated debut LP. Until then, anxious fans can take solace in a 7-inch, being released February 2nd 2010 - consider it a preview of what is to come.

THE DIODES

diodes_nyc_desannaHometown: Toronto, ON
The Diodes were part of the first wave of international Punk bands to surface in 1976. Their appearance supporting the Talking Heads, January 1977, at Ontario College of Art is legendary in the development of the alternative music scene in Toronto and in Canada. In their short career, the band went on to achieve many firsts, including; running Canada’s first Punk club, Crash ‘n’ Burn; the only Canadian Punk band to sign a major record deal (CBS/Epic), releasing an album in October 1977; ahead of The Sex Pistols and other spearheads of the Punk genre. The album was released domestically in many European countries achieving a cult status in Italy, Sweden, Holland and France. The Diodes toured extensively between 1977-1981 supporting The Ramones, The Dead Boys, The Runaways, The Cramps, Ultravox, Gary Numan and U2. They headlined New York’s CBGB’S, Max’s Kansas City, Peppermint Lounge and LA’s The Whiskey A Go Go to rave reviews in The Village Voice, New York Rocker, The Trouser press, Creem, NME, Sounds and Billboard. The Diodes were also the first Canadian Punk band to chart on the Canadian Top 100. High decibel, high energy with aggressive guitars and swirling melodic vocals after 30 years of silence, The Diodes will reassemble for a string of tour dates with the original 1977 line up. A new vinyl album, Time Damage, has just been released on Rave Up Records, Italy.

Formed in Kingston, Ontario by four High School friends, Everlea spent a few years developing their infectious sound, harnessing the power of their live show and gathering experiences that would make up the bulk of their material.
With the arrival of 2007 came a 16 track, self-titled release and a proud return to New York City’s M.E.A.N.Y. Festival where they caught the eyes and ears of Glassnote Entertainment Group’s A&R Executive, Diane Passage. They were signed to the newly founded independent record label soon thereafter, impressing all with their material, live show, and obsessive work ethic. For fans of: Bruce Springsteen, Wilco
You’ve heard this story before. Best friends grow restless and feel suffocated by the confines of their small town, write music in basements at ungodly hours about leaving home behind and never coming back. Songs fueled by ambition and frustration, echoed by the youth of the city that kindly latch on to the band as hometown heroes. The band plays the local pub monthly and ends three years later due to too much alcohol consumption and giving up on the idea they’re ever going to make it out alive. Well, in the case of Cobourg, Ontario’s Gentlemen Husbands the story is only half true. Instead of rotting away in the suburban wasteland they call home, the four big hearted musicians took their king size anthems to the road, where they quickly learned that their take on Rock n’ Roll was more than welcomed! Comprised of singer Rick Ballard, guitarist Ryan Hutcheson, bassist Jed Atkinson and drummer Dan Farrell, three of the four members were formerly in a hardcore band together before trading in their Norma Jean records for The Boss, sliding on their cowboy boots, and stomping out into the terrain of the cutthroat music industry. In their short time as a band, Gentlemen Husbands have played alongside Lucero, Murder by Death, Attack in Black, Saint Alvia and The Arkells.

The new album reinvents The Junction’s staple hard-hitting choruses and anthem-like presence while keeping that key element that has won over fans and members of the media alike - creating big songs with a lot of heart!

For fans of: Bob Dylan, Dan Mangan
There is a hole in this big, fast, technicolor city. A big, gaping, black hole. And Montreal folk artist Leif Vollebekk, is frantically trying to fill it. With his organic folk songs and sensitive melodies, scraping along minimalist guitar strums, Vollebekk’s debut full length Inland and live shows, somehow, stop time. Giving the city a moment to breathe and reflect, Vollebekk fills this hole with warm-hearted compositions. And, at the sound of his last strum, the city goes back to a booming rage. Wearing his heart on his sleeve, Vollebekk independently released his beautiful debut album Inland, and has just returned from a tour out East, which included playing alongside Elephant Stone, Basia Bulat, Elliot Brood, Royal Wood, and also making an appearance at Pop Montreal. A Blacksheep Inn favourite, Vollebekk, with his captivating live sets, has made a name for himself in some of Canada’s most competitive music communities; Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa.

MAKE YOUR EXIT

make-your-exittHometown: Toronto, ON
For fans of: Fleet Foxes, Wolf Parade
You could try to describe the sound of the five eclectic musical backgrounds melding together to become what is Make Your Exit with fancy words and hyperbole… but the overbearing fact of their music is that it’s simply honest. And honest music isn’t always easy to come by. It’s stripped down, yet amped up, it’s noisy and abrasive, yet quiet and modest. It’s the sounds of five extremely talented twenty-somethings just letting it all out. Lucky for us, their post-rock release lands somewhere between familiar and completely unfamiliar. Four part vocal harmonies akin to Fleet Foxes, with the addition of jazzy saxophone parts, and just the right tasteful amount of Canadiana twang - Make Your Exit is unlike anything you’ve heard before, yet it won’t be hard to wrap your head around. Remind Me the Reason I Came, (released September ‘09) is the band’s second EP and showcases their unique unbridled songwriting energy in the best light. 2010 will see the band spending some time on the road and recording their next EP.

Born and raised in steel city, you can hear traces of his hometown each time he strums. It didn’t take long for the local community (that which has borne many of our countries greatest) to take note of this humble musician. World-renowned session guitarist Bill Dillon was quick to take a liking to Paxton’s work and commented one night after hearing Paxton’s song “City of Smoke”, “this is the kind of song you should hear on the radio today.” Coming from someone who has recorded with the likes of Joni Mitchell and Robbie Robertson, it’s a compliment any growing artist would hope for. After self recording and releasing his debut EP Hand Drawn Maps in early 2005, Paxton was invited by local producers Michael Keire and Glen Marshall at Vibewrangler studios, known for their work with Feist and Apostle of Hustle, to record what would become 2008’s stunning Back Home in the Village. Paxton seriously experiments with language itself and explores the deep dark depths of the human experience, never trading in the trademark fragility that makes his work so compelling.

PEOPLE IN GREY

people-in-greyHometown: Toronto, ON
For Fans of: The Strokes, The Libertines
It’s been a long road for People in Grey. After playing with half of Toronto’s musicians, more line up changes than the Brian Jonestown Massacre, and name changes galore, we arrive upon today’s version of People in Grey. A three piece that fancies guttural Brit-infused garage rock and roll and writes raging anthems to dance to.
Born and raised in Toronto, vocalist/guitarist Shawn Leger met bassist Scott Thompson in high school. After playing in different bands together and apart for 15 years, you grow a certain type of intrinsic trust and comfort ability in your songwriting. It’s this untouched gritty honesty you can hear pouring out of each of People in Grey’s tracks. Visually they hint at the rebellious charm of the Voidoids, sonically you can hear early Springsteen or the dirty-prettiness of Psychedelic Furs, all mixed with their own twist brewed from years of playing together. It’s vintage punk, perfect pop and steel rock all at once.

For fans of: Grizzly Bear, DD/MM/YYYY
In the beginning, the four best friends who make up the ambitiously named outfit locked themselves up for days in their parents’ basements practicing and refining demos, only emerging when they had stumbled upon the most perfect blend of garage pop/guitar fuzz rock this side of the border has heard in a long time. It’s this obsessive compulsiveness in their music that pays off huge on their independently released debut,Everybody See This. In the same way the Strokes released sonically moving debut albums, it is apparent that this is much more than an average first run from a bunch of college dropouts. This is a band with a future. Everybody See This is ripe and bubbling with the type of youthful rage you can’t fake. It’s delicate and fragile in all the right places and thoroughly captivating from start to finish. In the same way they originally honed their sound, Sandman Viper Command isolated themselves for six months in a barn on the outskirts of Hamilton, Ontario with producer Dave King, recording intensely to make sure Everybody See This captured the raw, frenetic qualities of the band, and achieving that lofty childhood goal of creating a sound they can call their own.

Meet Sweet Thing, a five-piece Toronto band that play infectious pop tunes. Sometimes they get pretty rocking, in that dramatic way that feels best when you clench your fist and raise it to the sky. Charged with dueling guitars, Beach Boys harmonies, and energy up the wazoo, Sweet Thing are the musical equivalent of drinking a milkshake at a 50s diner where the waiter keeps jumping on the table (and you like it). Let’s call it ‘music to dance like a dork to’.
They are putting the finishing touches on their first full length album, which they recorded in LA with Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliot Smith, Sweet Thing). Once that bad boy hits the shelves July 6th, 2010, you’ll be forced to rethink your life. See you in therapy, sucka.

promoHometown: Toronto, ON
For Fans of: Foo Fighters, Wilco
Sharing the same modern take on the classics as other un-hipster-friendly bands like the Foo Fighters, Oasis and Pearl Jam, the Toronto quartet champion walls of guitars and arena-ready hooks, but not at the expense of witty, honest lyrics. Lines like “Good things come to those who wait/Good things come to those who wait on tables,” from the B-side of their soon to be released 7”, Shook Our Bones, portray van Helvoort as a songwriter whose heart lies in the stadiums but whose mind is firmly rooted in indie rock territory - both literally and figuratively, given their small hometown.
“All the best ideas and melodies come from that golden age in Soul and Rock music” adds brother and bassist Jeff van Helvoort. “We want to write songs that can take the best parts of all those bands and make them into something of our own, not just a reproduction of one aspect of them. I wouldn’t be happy going up on stage and doing an impersonation of my favourite band.”
In the end, that’s exactly what makes them special - their dedication to song writing and nothing else. Teenage Kicks have made themselves noteworthy by caring about the one thing that people remember most about bands, years after they break up: the songs.

For fans of: She and Him, The Meligrove Band
Everyone can write a catchy song, but it’s a band like Whale Tooth that pack as much punch lyrically as they do musically, to really stand out in the often overcrowded Toronto scene. Traces of soul and jazz can be found sprinkled atop their summer-friendly pop rock, and this has proven to be the defining factor in winning over listeners at every venue they play. Or perhaps it’s front woman Elise LeGrow’s commanding vocals that has the power to convert even the unlikeliest of followers, or perhaps it is their cunning ability to craft delicious hooks that will be left playing in your head for days and days… LeGrow and her bandmates began making waves in Toronto and surrounding cities almost immediately after forming in 2007. LeGrow, already with an impressive resume as a jazz vocalist under her belt, joined forces with guitarists and co-vocalists Norm Maschke and Alex Denike and began writing some of the most honest and potent tunes this city has heard. Accompanied by the vibrant rhythm section, bassist Michael McCreary and drummer Sep Noroozi, the band hit the ground running. They soon found themselves playing a slew of shows, including appearances at CMW and NXNE and releasing their debut EP to instant critical acclaim.

WILDLIFE

wildlifepromo2Hometown: All Over, ON
For fans of: Born Ruffians, The Golden Dogs
Wildlife is five friends from Ontario - Five energetic, adventurous, youthful barbarians who held their first concert in a haunted ballroom on the Isle of Pines on the St. Lawrence River*. As the name implies, Wildlife is very much a contingent of spirited Canadian mountain children. Though geographically distant from any actual peaks, it’s not difficult to imagine the band cutting loose through patches of wildflowers, hitting you over the head with snowballs, and tobogganing down steep slippery slopes straight into the warm cave of your heart. In short, Wildlife likes to have fun (whether that means making you cheer, dance, jump, clap, shout or scream-cry), and the band is keen on creating a big, sweaty sound that captures what it is to be young and vital.
Though Strike Hard, Young Diamond has its sights set on creating light-hearted indie ballads to blast through your vintage speakers as the sun comes up after a long distant party, the record has a far greater heartfelt depth buried past it’s sweaty outer shell. And if the high-speed ambush of sleds and snowballs doesn’t surprise you, finding yourself in a record that is so exuberant and genuinely thoughtful very well may.
