Get ready Canada - Portland, Oregon’s hidden gem, Emma Hill, is ready to engage Canadian audiences with her sophomore album Clumsy Seduction. The album has charted on several indie radio stations across the US, including hitting number 12 on Acoustic Pie Radio in early 2010.

Accompanied now by her Gentlemen Callers, Emma Hill has really hit her stride. Hill’s sultry folk music has been compared to the likes of Sarah McLachlan, Joni Mitchell, and Joah Baez. “Well-crafted, sweetly flavored folk tunes aren’t the only aspect that puts Hill at the front of the pack in her genre. From what I can tell, she’s also a hell of a hard worker, ” described The Source Weekly. “Emma Hill is not afraid to sing. In fact, her voice’s countrified richness, delicate inflections and fear-no-range transitions make it easy to imagine that’s all she ever does,” wrote the Willamette Weekly.

Not only a talented musician and songwriter, Hill has a compelling story to share. She began crafting her personal flavor of folk in Sleetmute, the small Alaskan village she grew up in. After moving to Palmer for High School, Hill quickly became a staple of the budding Alaskan music scene, bringing her rurally influenced stylings to Anchorage. Emma sang with the group Blackbird Productions and as half of the folk duo Pennies and Patches - garnering a large local recognition. In 2006 Pennies and Patches went on hiatus, and Emma found herself in Portland, Oregon and began writing more personal solo material.

Gearing up for the release of her follow-up to Clumsy Seduction, Hill figured it was time to properly service the album in Canada. After a successful visit to Toronto for North by Northeast Festival, the band found their twang-filled folk was very at home amongst Canadian music fans. Hill has shared stages in the past with Matt Hopper and the Roman Candles, The Old Believers, and more.

Canadian tour dates to be announced soon. Video links and bio below.

BIO
Emma Hill is a 22 year old singer songwriter living in Portland Oregon. Emma began crafting her personal flavor of folk in Sleetmute, the small Alaskan village she grew up in. After moving to Palmer for High School, Emma quickly became a staple of the budding Alaskan music scene, bringing her rurally influenced stylings to Anchorage. Emma sang with the group Blackbird Productions and as half of the folk duo Pennies and Patches - garnering a large local recognition. In 2006 Pennies and Patches went on hiatus, and Emma found herself in Portland, Oregon and began writing more personal solo material. In 2007 Emma recorded and released her first full length album Just Me on Kuskokwim records. Just Me showcased her wide vocal range as well as her eclectic musical taste while staying in the realm of folk/Americana. Emma toured extensively to support the album throughout the west coast as well as a national tour. The album also received regular radio play on college and independent radio stations. Just Mereached 8 on the KRUA Anchorage album charts.

In 2008 Emma recorded her second album Clumsy Seduction, which was released in March 2009 on Kuskokwim. With the addition of her backing band, The Gentlemen Callers, Emma maintains her strong folk/Americana roots while telling beautiful stories and unbelievably catchy melodies. The band adds a delightful dynamic including sexy pedal steel licks and haunting harmonies. They’ve toured extensively in support of her sophomore album including a 6-week national tour in summer of 2009. Since then, Clumsy Seduction has charted on several indie radio stations, including hitting number 12 on Acoustic Pie Radio in early 2010. Emma Hill and Her Gentlemen Callers are currently working on her third release, Meet Me at the Moon, expected out in early 2011.

It’s been months since the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico. Eleven people were killed in the explosion, and millions of gallons of oil have spewed into the Gulf of Mexico in what has become the largest oil spill in U.S. history. The environmental effects have been devastating, and the full extent of the damage is still unknown. The only way to prevent this from happening again is by putting a stop to offshore drilling. A clean energy future is possible but public support is needed.

Spill: Songs For Oil Spill Relief is a free music compilation download in support of Oceana, the largest international organization focused solely on ocean conservation. Oceana is encouraging people to help end offshore drilling through donation support and by signing their petition. Offshore drilling is a cause that the musicians on the Canadian compilation see as a global issue. In exchange for making an online donation, you will receive a link to download the SPILL compilation.

Ryan McCambridge of the band Recovery Child organized the SPILL compilation, reaching out to other musicians in the Canadian music scene.

Winnipeg’s indie pop collective Boats will embark on their fourth national tour this fall. Joined in most cities by Vancouver’s Hot Panda, the band will sweep across Canada and dip into the states for select shows. Their routing includes showcases at this year’s Halifax Pop Explosion and Vancouver’s Olio Festival. Having released their second full length album, Cannonballs, Cannonballs earlier this year to great critical acclaim, it is without a doubt Boats have a rare and special honesty that is taking music fans by surprise.

Boats have shared stages with the likes of Art Brut, Holy Fuck, Fucked Up, Bedouin Soundclash, Cuff the Duke, Land of Talk, and more. They have graced the cover of Winnipeg street weekly Uptown Magazine and received a great deal of attention from college and CBC radio. Critics are equally as impressed with the band’s recorded work as their inspired live shows. In a CD review, ChartAttack wrote, “It’ll take a few spins before you’ll be able to pick specific parts out of the wash of glittering pop, but Cannonballs, Cannonballs is worth some investment” and Winnipeg Free Press scribed, “Bursting with influences too obscure to mention, this band careens around these 14 tracks, leaving no musical stone unturned or quirky passage unattended to. It’s pure new-era pop and it works even after you get used to leader Mat Klachefsky’s eccentric adenoidal articulations.”

Boats have a unique and unassuming way of asking for, better yet demanding, attention with their music. It’s just a matter of time before the playful toddler inside of us all finds comfort in these refreshing musicians’ output. Tour dates and bio below.

BIO
Boats play music songs in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada with lyrics about dismemberment (the good kind), excellent posture, and orthodontic surgery. A junky indie-pop band with high-end hopes but low-end equipment, Mat Klachefsky’s bizarre vocal chords mixed with his “infectiously catchy” pop songs and boundless energy have been freaking out audiences ever since they released their critically acclaimed first album Intercontinental Champion to local audiences in October 2007. Since then they have embarked on four Canadian tours, played packed houses at SXSW, NXNE, Pop Montreal, WCMA’s and Sled Island, and charted solidly all across Canada.

Boats released their pristine 2nd full length album Cannonballs, Cannonballs in May 2010.

Cannonballs, Cannonballs takes you to the bizarre world where; kids protect their summer camp from a fake mustache tree, TV shows are broadcast on the sides of buildings and Olympic ski jumpers dot the horizon. Cannonballs, Cannonballs also Includes a duet about a fictional performing team: Smokestack who has a hole in his body; and Lucy who thinks she will be the mother of a flock of birds. but won’t (“Smokestack & Lucy’s Magnificent Cabaret”). They are excited to take the rest of the universe to their world of complete nonsense again.

Boats is made up of a rotating cast of Winnipeg musicians, but the current version has a pack of Winnipeg all-stars surrounding singer- songwriter Mat Klachefsky. These can include, but are not limited to, members of The Western States, The Paperbacks, Half Court Prayer, The Details, The Paperbacks, Oldfolks Home, and Transistor Sound & Lighting Co.

This southern thrash threesome are pleased to announce the release of their debut full length - New Bones on August 31st, 2010. They will spend the remainder of the year touring the release extensively including a few stops through Ontario in early September.

After releasing their debut EP Tropical Terror in 2008, Cactus’s were handpicked to play festivals such as South by Southwest Music Festival, CMJ, and Canadian Music Week. Their lively and visceral way of writing songs and performing has provoked comments from critics comparing them to At the Drive-In, Converge, or The Black Lips. However, most people are just stunned and don’t really know where to place their spastic music. The band then made an interesting career choice and spent 3 months playing and living in South Korea.

This is the band that after grinding up against the singer of the Plain White T’s at a show, in an ironic twist, were invited to support the band on a lengthy US tour. Though not the most ideal fit… it’s just a matter of time before Cactus’s have converted the nation to their brand of organized chaos.

Comprised of members Jru Frazier, Will Hooper and Asher Rogers - the threesome is made up of members from Nashville’s punk and metal elite. Together they form Cactus’s, and as NeuFutur Magazine has written, “With a three man effort and enough on stage antics to blind God himself, Cactus’s self proclaimed style of tropical punk is taking Nashville and beyond by storm.”

MINI BIO
Three years ago a band was formed out of writers block, alcohol abuse, debt, and obsessive compulsive disorder. Within those three years Cactus’s has relentlessly toured the US and Canada, released their self recorded EP Tropical Terror, played SXSW, CMJ, and even been asked to play the Canadian Music Week festival in Toronto as one of only three American bands. Most recently, Cactus’s finished recording their new 13 song full length, New Bones and spent 3 months living and playing shows in South Korea, spreading their brand of rowdy thrash rock to Asia. Cactus’s was also recently featured as unsigned band of the month in Alternative Press magazine
